Jason Isaacs, who plays villains so well (Re: "Harry Potter" films) plays the ruthless British cavalry commander, Col. Chris Cooper, one of my favorite actors, plays Colonel Burwell, the Continental Army commander in South ual excellent performance from him. The late Heath Ledger plays his oldest son, Gabriel.this was the first film I saw Ledger in and I was (and still am) impressed w/his acting. Mel Gibson plays Colonel Benjamin Martin, the militia leader, and does his usual superb job. The film does a good job in depicting the part militias played in delaying Cornwallis although it is far from being historically accurate in the particulars. Nathanael Greene succeeded in a war of attrition and delaying tactics that bought time for Washington's army and the French fleet and army to combine forces at Yorktown and defeat Cornwallis. The militias, combined w/Continental Army forces under Gen. "The Patriot" is based loosely on militia leader, Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox" and an amalgam of other militia leaders of the Carolinas, who became a thorn in the side of Lord Cornwallis, the British commander during our Revolutionary War.

This is a movie every American should have in his collection. I think it brings a great value to the movie, especially when Martin waves the flag during the last battle (which, by the way, is my favorite scene of the entire movie).
Composed by John Williams (Indiana Jones, Star Wars), it stirs up the feeling of patriotism. I always wondered how the guy got there in the first place. In the extended version, we see a soldier still alive when Martin leaves, which explains why Tavington found a survivor of the attack. One of my favorites, which I think is really important to understand the movie a little more, happens after Martin attacks the British convoy with his two sons. Strickland did a great job in his review detailing all the scenes that were added. Bringing the movie to 3 hours (which is about the length of a Lord of the Rings movie, by the way), the additional scenes offer more insights to understand key moments in the movie.

I owned the movie on DVD, and I recently decided to upgrade to Blu-Ray when I discovered that an extended version was available. Under the direction of the Continental Army, he gathers a militia to fight for America's right to exist. In this movie directed by Roland Emmerich, Mel Gibson plays a South Carolina farmer, Benjamin Martin, who sees his life changed when the war takes one of his sons. It just reminds me how our great nation was born, as well as all the sacrifices made by the people who had a dream and did everything they could to see this dream fulfilled. I have the tradition of watching this movie every 4th of July.
